About Red Hydrant Press

Red Hydrant Press is the name of my studio in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I started doing business under that name 10 years ago when I moved to the Tanglefoot building, I just wanted a name with no race, age or gender connotations.

I went to school planning on being a graphic designer, but life took some turns and I ended up being a printmaker instead, that was almost 20 years ago.

I moved to the US in 2000, since then my working studio has moved from a wet spot in the basement to the 3rd floor of the Tanglefoot building. I have used spoons, rolling pins, door knobs, light bulbs, old wringer machines, handmade presses, and finally a real Sturges press to make my prints. But the struggle is never whether you have the best tools or the right space to create; it is finding the passion and the need to create and communicate. That I stumbled upon by accident, when I learned about genetic modification. Before then I’ve never had the urge to communicate a message with an image; and that’s really how it all started, before then I had the technical knowledge, but no inspiration or motivation, so I really wasn’t doing much with it. After that turning point, I couldn’t stop.

The issues I deal with are many, but basically my work is still about GMO’s, self sufficiency, gardening, the environment, politics, climate change, and lately motherhood.

I became a mother 2 years ago, and that has changed and challenged the work I do, but especially  the way I work. I don’t have open studios as often, but I’m there almost every night, and many days as well. If you would like to schedule a visit, please send me an email to arrange it. I would be happy to show you around.
